Annice Fawell Obituary

After a long and well-lived life, the family of Annice Eleanor Fawell announces her passing at the age of 107.

She is survived by her daughters Janet Little, and Judy Fawell, son-in-law Harold Little, grandchildren – Chris (Leigh), Joanne (Matthew Schoenhardt) and Kent Little and five great-grandchildren – Gabrielle and Graceon Little and Isaac, Annika and Nathan Schoenhardt and many treasured nieces and nephews.

Annice was predeceased by her loving husband Charlie, her five brothers (Albert, Henry, Melvin, Norman, George) and sisters-in-law.

Annice was born on Sept. 17, 1918 on the family homestead near Phippen, Saskatchewan, to Halvor and Anna Johnson, the first daughter after five sons. Rumor has it, the neighbour didn’t believe Annice was a girl and had to come over to see for herself. She attended Nottawa school, 2 miles across the pasture from the home farm. She completed her high school education in Outlook and then went to Normal School to become a teacher. When she returned home at Easter, she took over teaching at Nottawa school.  She taught there for an additional year and then at Donegal school near Reward.  She was paid a princely $500 in one lump sum at the end of the year. After realizing teaching was not for her, she attended secretarial school.

She married the love of her life Charlie Fawell on May 1, 1943, the day after he graduated from the ROTC with a B.Ag. While he was in the army, they moved around Saskatchewan and Ontario, and she followed employing her secretarial skills – sometimes arriving just after he was transferred elsewhere. Eventually, they settled on the family farm in Adanac, living in two granaries the summer the new house was built (1952) and moving into Saskatoon, where Charlie taught at the University of Saskatchewan for winters. They built a home and retired in Unity in 1978. A woman of many talents, she was an accomplished cook, painter, calligrapher, gardener and seamstress. Into her late 90s, she was still leading the kitchen crew, especially supervising the gravy-making. She loved to read, play cards and do crosswords and Sudoku.  She was a dedicated member of the Unity United Church, Sons of Norway Lodge and Lioness Clubs and always remained an ardent supporter of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Fiercely independent and quietly determined, she was an original resident of Luther Place in Unity, residing there for 23 years with the support of many friends until a month before her 104th birthday in 2022.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Poplar Court in Wilkie who provided such exemplary care and her many friends in Luther Place who watched out for her when she lived there.
