Darlene Riess passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2023. The Memorial Mass for Darlene will be held Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at 11:00am at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Unity, SK.
Darlene Elizabeth Riess was born on May 20, 1943. She was the oldest child of Peter and Katherine Schraeder and big sister to Ken and Gloria. She grew up on a farm just outside of Unity and moved into town a few years later. Darlene attended Belton school in the earlier years and then graduated from Unity Composite High School in 1961. Growing up, Darlene enjoyed listening to music, playing board games and cards with her family. She would skate for hours on the backyard rink that her dad would make every winter.
In the summer of 1966, Darlene married Alvin Riess. They had two children, Corey and Roxanne. Family was the most important thing to Darlene. She loved everything that had to do with family. Supporting her children’s sports endeavors was one of them. Through the years, you could find her in the stands watching volleyball, hockey, fastball and slo-pitch. Her grandchildren - Thad, Nathan, Casey and Tayler were her most precious and treasured gifts. They meant the world to her and she spent as much time with them as she could.
Darlene enjoyed keeping score for the Unity Cardinal Baseball team. You could find her in the booth keeping track of all the hits, runs and errors. She would keep score at any game she went to watch, especially her daughter’s fastball games.
Darlene enjoyed gardening, golf, knitting and traveling with Alvin. She was a member of Ducks Unlimited and the Catholic Women’s League in Unity. You could always find a turkey cooking in her oven for the annual fall suppers at the church.
Darlene worked at the Unity Credit Union for over 30 years. She started in reception, worked up to a teller and then spent the majority of her time as their Member Service Representative.
Darlene was a loving, caring woman. She would jump at the chance to help others. She always had a warm smile on her face. She was a gentle soul who put others first. She was loved deeply by her family. She was our rock and she will be greatly missed.
