John was born in Biggar. He grew up on the family farm, farming with his dad. In 1980 he married Emilie (Esquirol).
In 1981 and 1982 they welcomed Lance and Blaise. He enjoyed time he spent with his grandsons, and time receiving family and friends at the family cabin at Turtle lake.
A highlight of his retirement years was belonging to the hiking club in Arizona where he received his 500 mile badge during his final winter there.
