MARY HALLGRIMSON Obituary

Mary Hallgrimson

May 26, 1926-April 16, 2020

Mary passed away peacefully in Poplar Courts in Wilkie on Thursday April 16, 2020 at the age of 93.

She is survived by her son Glenn (Beatrice Sander), grandchildren Janelle, Tamara, great-grandchild Teiva; son Michael (Cori Kolbeck), grandchildren Nicolas, Jaclyn, and Mason; as well as sisters Jean and Rose.  She is predeceased by her husband Norman and her son Grant as well as her father and mother, Mike and  Anne (Kohuch) Popadynec.  Also predeceased are Mary’s siblings Andy, Katie, Mike, Minnie, Alec, Barney, Sophie, Joe, and Ollie.

Mary was born on the family farm near Wishart. We know her childhood was very dear to her as she told many, many wonderful stories over the years that no one ever tired of hearing. She left home at an early age venturing to Winnipeg to work and live with her sister, Jean.  She eventually returned to Wynyard meeting Norman Hallgrimson. Dad adored mom and together they were married for 68 years before Dad’s passing in August 2016. Mom and Dad showed us how a marriage can work, getting through difficult times together and celebrating the good times. Upon marrying they lived in Vancouver where Glenn was born in 1948. After spending time on the coast, they moved back to Wynyard. They lived with Norman’s father, Byring (affectionately called “Happy Grandpa”). He was a very special person in Mary’s life.  A few years later in 1956, Grant was born.  Their last move was to Wilkie in 1959 where they resided for the remainder of their lives, and where Michael was born in 1966. Sadly, in 1972Grant passed away.

Mary was a great example of how someone should live their life. She was a wonderful mother, wife, grandma, aunt, sister and friend. She shared the words that her father had told her as a youngster… you are no better than anyone else, but you are also no less than anyone either. Mom treated people with kindness, respect and love, giving people her time and attention whether it was a visit at the post office where she worked for 25 years, tea with friends, or visits with family. Mom made family a priority and never missed an opportunity to attend family occasions and always loved going to the Popadynec family farm. Her ‘swish’ fashion sense and her fun-loving spirit will always make us smile. Mary will be dearly missed, but always fondly remembered.

Our family would like to sincerely thank all of the staff at Poplar Courts for the amazing care that Mary received while she lived there for the past several years.  We would invite any donations in Mary’s name to go to Poplar Courts Activity Fund, Wilkie Health Center, Box 459, 304 7th Ave. E., Wilkie, Sask., S0K 4W0.

There is no service planned at present, but we do hope to be able to gather in days ahead for a Celebration of Mary’s life.
