Matt Wildeman
September 11, 1933 – April 25, 2020
Matt passed away peacefully on April 25, 2020 in Unity, Saskatchewan with his family close by.
Matt was born to George and Mary Wildeman on the family farm in the Sunny Glen School District near Unity, Saskatchewan on September 11, 1933. He was the only boy and the eldest of 4 children.
Matt was a hard worker and had many jobs over the years, some of which included: Campbell Power (which he had many stories about), the Co-op Hardware, and of course, farming, which he loved and spent much of his life doing.
While working with Campbell Power in the Neilburg area he met Doreen Herle, his future wife.
They spent most of their lives on what Matt would always refer to as “the Old Wouters Farm” where he and Doreen raised their family of 5 children. Matt said some of his fondest memories were when his children were small and growing up – “to me they were the best looking kids in the world. I loved them and my wife dearly and was proud of them all.”
Matt will always be remembered for having a sense of humour (he loved to tell jokes) and for having many hobbies. He enjoyed tending garden, calling bingo, and wood working. He was also musically talented as he taught himself to play the accordion, banjo, and guitar. Earlier on in life Matt also loved to travel. He went to Mexico as well as Germany – one of his favourite places (next to “home sweet home” of course). Matt had a fondness for animals as well, especially cats. Into retirement some of Matt’s favorite times were playing cards with good company (Buck was his favorite), doing puzzles, and having family supper in the common room.
Some of my warmest memories of Grandpa (and I’m sure of many others) were spending time with him outside while he worked on his many projects, playing cards, and visiting with neighbors and friends. Everyone who knew him loved him and he could always put a smile on their face. He was truly a loving and caring man and we will all miss him so much.
Matt’s death has been especially hard for his wife, children, and grandchildren. You were so loved, Grandpa. We know you will always be with us, just in a better place.
Matt is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doreen; daughter Charlene (Glenn) and children Brett, Kyle, and Nicole; daughter Karen and three sons Mark, Scott, and Dylan; son Brent; daughter Debbie (Emmet) and children Jolene and Taylor, as well as Jolene’s twin boys Asher and Bentley – (Matt’s only great grandchildren); daughter Trish (Alton) and children Danielle and Jared; sister Hilda; and brother-in-law Ray Sass.
Matt was predeceased by his parents, George and Mary; his sisters Victoria and Evelyn; brother-in-law Mervyn Ashing; and infant grandson Sean.
