Martha Elizabeth (Welter) Leidl

Martha Elizabeth Leidl (nee Welter) of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, peacefully passed away at the age of 90 years, on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at the Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon.

Martha was born in Bruno, Saskatchewan, to Anton and Mary Welter, on June 28, 1935.   She grew up on a farm near Viscount with her parents and 6 other siblings.  After completing elementary School in Viscount, Martha took her grade 9 and 10 through correspondence.  She pursued her grades 11 and 12 at Sion Academy, a boarding school, where she had to work for her board.   After high school, Martha went to teacher’s college in Saskatoon.  She first taught at Rapid Advance School for 1 year. Her next teaching job was for 3 years at Pascal School in the Leipzig District. Finally before she was married, she taught 2 years in Plenty.   She married Raymond Leidl on October 10, 1960. They had met when she was teaching at Paschal School.  Ray and Martha went on to have 9 beautiful children. 

Martha enjoyed many activities. She was a great cook and baker, seamstress, and teacher.  She always liked to play cards and board games and set up puzzles with friends and family.  Her love for gardening kept her family fed well and she was always willing to share her harvest and baked goods with others.  She was often found subbing in the schools in the Wilkie area and she was known and respected for her caring and well delivered lessons.  Martha was an active member of the CWL and would often help coordinate and serve funeral lunches at the Catholic Church.  

Martha is survived by her loving husband, Raymond, (of almost 65 years), 8 children; Reg (Alisa) of Saskatoon, SK, Karen (Brad) Deviller of St. Albert, AB, Myrna (Blake) Nielsen of Lloydminster, SK, Mervyn (Barb) of Lacombe, AB, Kathy (John Faubert) of Kindersley, SK, Wayne (Sandra) of Wilkie, SK, Don (Megan) of Moncton, NB, and James (Chelsey) of Calgary, AB, 17 grandchildren; Derek (Gabrielle), Katelyn (Sean), Joshua, Anna (Luke), Jacqueline, Braden (Alysha), Toni, Matt (Cheyenne), Nicole, Erin, Korie (Tyler), Conor, Jocelyn, August, Finn, Jaxton, and Bentlee,  9 great-grandchildren; Arlo, Huxton, Sophie, Nash, Nolan, Linden, Emma, Collins, and Reide, brother Mervyn (Adrienne) of North Battleford, SK;  sister – in – law Vera Welter of Saskatoon, sister-in-law Lois Welter  of Nokomis, SK, brother/sister – in – laws Norbert and Odette Leidl of Fort Saskatchewan, AB, and many nieces and nephews. 

Martha is predeceased by her parents, Anton and Mary (Assinger) Welter; Ray’s parents, Frank and Agnes (Kobelsky) Leidl; brothers William, Arnold, Anton, and Peter; sister, Evelyn Daniels; son, Bernard; and grandson, Kohler.
