Maynard George Slater

April 8, 1932 ~ July 2, 2023 (age 91) 91 Years Old

Obituary

Major Maynard Slater passed away on July 2, 2023.

He was a quintessential Saskatchewan boy at heart, born in Kerrobert on April 8, 1932 and raised on the family farm at Tramping Lake. This country boy became a city kid temporarily upon a move into Saskatoon where he helped at his father’s hardware store until high school graduation.

Maynard was proud to have entered the Canadian Air Force and made his career there. He met his wife Frances from Canora and together they raised their growing family in various military outposts across Canada.

He owned farmland with his brother Richard back in Unity, so he and Frances made that their permanent home following his exit from military service. They celebrated their 50th anniversary prior to Frances’ death in 2003.

He wasn’t a person to sit idle. Maynard was always contributing to the community, be it municipal or even provincial levels. A staunch volunteer for many causes, this brought him in touch with people from many walks of life. He was a well-known champion for the Unity Flying Club and Unity Museum.

Maynard kept busy with his many activities until mutual friends introduced him to his second wife, Gladys Kelly. They hit it off immediately and were married for 19 years. He held a special sparkle in his eye for her, right up to his last days.

He is already missed by Gladys and her extended Kelly clan of children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was especially proud of his role as “Poppa” to the youngest generation.

Maynard’s legacy will be forever honoured by his children: daughter, Joan and family Adam (Radika) and Andrew; son John (Kelda) and family Sean and Maeve; daughter Judith (Glenn) and family Matthew and Luke; daughter Joyce (Chris) and family Kate and Jessie; stepchildren, Doyle, Candice, Wendy, Pat and families; and brothers Mervin, Richard and families. He was predeceased by his first wife Frances in 2003.

He will forever be missed but never forgotten.

A Funeral Mass for Maynard will be held on Friday, July 7, 2023 at 1:00PM at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Unity, SK.
