RENO BERTOIA Obituary

In Loving Memory of Reno Bertoia

Reno Bertoia passed away peacefully with family by his side on October 17, 2020 in the Cut Knife Special Care Home at the age of 87. Reno was born at the family farm on December 5th, 1932, the third child of Angelo and Elsie Bertoia of the Baldwinton District.

Reno attended Vance School then St. Thomas College in North Battleford till grade 11. After school, Reno travelled to Alberta to work at logging camps and helped on a relative’s farm. He married Shirley Vera Hewson on August 10, 1960 where they settled into their new home on Charlie Niven’s homestead. Shortly after, they relocated to the Gray’s homestead where he and Shirley began farming. It was here that they raised their four children, Holly, Kim, Todd and Derek.

During the many years of farming and raising cattle, Reno was very involved in the community. Over the years he was an active member of the Baldwinton 4-H Club, Sask Wheat Pool, Hillsdale RM, IAEA Host Family Association and the Cut Knife Hospital Board. His love for music and socializing was evident. His singing and playing of the guitar and omnicord was enjoyed by all, even displaying his talents when living in assisted and long-term care. He enjoyed playing and coaching fastball for many years. Reno spent many winter days watching sons and grandkids play hockey. Together, with dear friends, Reno and Shirley followed the chuckwagon circuit in their fifth wheel and attended the annual Craven Jamboree. In winter, they passed the time bowling with Neilburg and Cut Knife leagues. Carrying on his late wife’s love for gardening, he tended to his large sunflower and poppy memorial garden. Reno will be sadly missed by his large family and many friends.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving children; daughter Holly and grandchildren: Krystie(Cole) Hardy, Nikki, Stephen (Morgan), Shenelle (Reed); Sons: Kim (Rhonda) and grandchildren: Ashleigh (Stephen) McGovern, Taylor, Madison(Brennan); Todd (Nicole) and grandchildren Dawson, Brandt, McLean, Jaxon; Derek (Kristine) and grandchildren: Brooklyn, Tylan, Caleb; and great grandchildren: Ryder, Quinn and Aubrey McGovern, Emersyn and Jackson Hardy; sisters Louise Herriman and Loretta Bertoia; brothers Oswald (Mary), Leo
