ROBERT MASON Obituary

Robert Greg Mason of Perdue, SK died peacefully at Biggar Long Term Care on July 5, 2021. He was 102 years old.

Bob is mourned by his children: Beth (Greg) Polovick of Mapleridge, B.C., Jim (Janice) Mason of Perdue, Barry (Kathy) Mason of Lanigan, SK, Tracy Mason of Perdue, his 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Bob is predeceased by his wonderful wife Phyllis (Williams) Mason (Sept. 19, 2018) and his son Richard Mason (1986) as well as his parents Walter and Vida (Hope) Mason, and brothers Bill (Clara) Mason and Walter (Audrey) Mason and his in-laws Ross and Lizzie (Scarf) Williams, and their children Norman (Loretta) Williams, Lola (Grant) Montgomery, Alena Williams, and Clif (Eleanor) Williams.

The Walter Mason Family was farming near Radisson in 1919 when Bob was born on May 8th. He attended Radisson School but because he had epilepsy was not allowed to continue there and was home schooled by his mother (a teacher) to grade 8. Bob always said that he was illiterate because he only went to grade 8 in school.

The family continued to farm in the ‘Dirty Thirties’ moving to Tessier during Bob’s teens. In 1943, Bob sailed to Europe with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Regiment, Signals Platoon. His 2 years as a soldier inspired him to write many poems that reflected on his experiences and possibly were his form of therapy. Like most soldiers, Bob had many close calls but by some miracle was able to return home after the war, in 1945.

On June 27, 1947, Bob married the love of his life, Phyllis Williams (the wedding had to be delayed a week because Phyllis got the measles!) They farmed south of Kinley, SK and had their first 2 children while there. In 1956, the family moved to Perdue where they had 3 more children. Bob continued to farm until the 1960’s when he rented out his farm land. He worked on road construction and had some harrowing stories about drivers speeding through construction zones. Because he wanted to be closer to home, Bob got a job at Cominco Potash Mine by Delisle, SK where he did maintenance work until he retired at 65. It was during this time that golf became a favored pastime for Bob. It wasn’t about his golf score as much as he visiting and exercise. He walked the course well into his 90’s and went golfing on his 97th birthday!

Besides family and his huge garden and golf, Bob’s big joy was writing and reading. His poetry was published by Cominco Potash Remember and the Farmers’ Union (“The Coyotes Call” and “Circling Under the Sun”). He loved to visit and tell stories; their door was always open.

We miss him dearly.
