Obituary

Rachelle Mary (nee DeRoo) Martin

1929-2023

Rachel was born on November 1, 1929 to Marie Dombrecht and August DeRoo near Unity on the family farm. She passed away July 1, 2023 in Unity at the age of 93, a well lived life.

She spent school years at Ruth School district, enjoyed farm life, especially horseback riding, but not milking the cows so much! She moved with parents to Chilliwack, BC in 1946. She met her future husband Erwin Martin in 1949 and they were wed in 1950. To this union 4 children were born – Wayne, Gordon, Jocelyn and Deborah. Erwin, Rachel and their family moved back to Unity in 1961 to a small farm on the outskirts of town. They sold the farm in 1987 and moved into Unity across from Memorial Park.

Rachel was a loving Mother, farm wife, worked for awhile for Tellier Men’s Wear and Home Care for 15 years. She made lasting friendships with all her clients. She enjoyed crocheting in her spare time, so many doilies and half a dozen tablecloths were given away. She loved dancing and in her later years watched the Old Time Dancing on TV. During the time Coronation Street was on, everyone was forbidden to interrupt until it was over. Though she also binged watched on Sundays to in case she missed something. She was known for her hugs, had a good sense of humor and lived life to the fullest! Rachel regularly visited people in long term care and the hospital and was sure to bring them tarts or a treat. She always remembered birthdays, you either got a card or a phone call and sometimes both. She had many friends and family that she stayed in contact with by cards, phone calls and lately her Ipad. Rachel’s wish was to stay in her home for as long as possible and her wish came true. She entered the hospital on June 23rd and was there for 8 short days. She never lost her sense of humor, pulled a few jokes or said something funny to make everyone laugh. She passed away July 1st between a storm and fireworks – what a great send off!

Rachel was predeceased by her parents, August in 1973 and Marie in 1971; her husband Erwin in 2009; daughter Debbie in 2021; son-in-law Dennis Kraft 2009; daughter-in-law Grace in 1981; grandson Clinton in 1981; great-grandson Calvin in 2004; her brother Marcel and his wife Mary DeRoo; brother-in-law Gordon Watt and nephew Gary DeRoo.
