Bill was born in Shaunavon, SK, the 6th of 8 children for Bill & Molly (Poppy) Meek. The family rented various farms in the Shaunavon area, moving several times during his childhood. He learned the value of hard work early in his life, as he was in charge of going to the country school early to deliver water and start a fire in the woodstove.
At 15, he left school and worked for several farmers for a few years before landing the job running a co-op pasture. During that time, he started dating and later married Connie Torwick, a friend of his sister, Irene. Another stint of farming with his brothers, Alfred & Jack, followed, during which time first Celsa then Kevin were born. Bill was then hired as a rider at Val Marie PFRA pasture. Shauna was born while they lived at Val Marie. This job turned into an enjoyable career for Bill, who was promoted in 1975 to pasture manager at Progress PFRA, just outside of Kerrobert, after he had upgraded his education and earned his GED.
Bill and Connie created a balanced life of work and play – riding the range, raising kids, and harvesting a big garden while enjoying square dancing, curling, card evenings with friends, 4-H leadership, and visiting relatives.
After retiring in 1997, they built their dream home in Unity and quickly became a part of the community. Bill joined the Legion, volunteered many hours at the Unity museum, drove the courtesy car, and grew a large garden. They continued square dancing until physical limitations no longer permitted them to enjoy it. Many wonderful trips followed, including travelling to eastern Canada, Yukon, Alaska, and New Zealand.
Bill and Connie were thrilled to welcome grandchildren, Devon and Cara, to the family and loved to spoil them during summer visits. Following Connie’s death in 2018 and a few years on his own, Bill decided to sell the house & move into Parkview Place. He enjoyed his time there and the friends he made. He was happy to welcome Devon’s wife, Alyssa, and their son William to the family, and meeting his namesake in 2025 was a highlight of his year.
Bill passed away on January 13 at the Unity and District Health Centre after a short stay.
Bill is survived by daughters, Celsa (David) Longmuir and Shauna Meek (Kirk Weber); grandchildren, Devon (Alyssa) Longmuir and Cara Longmuir; great-grandson, William Longmuir; sister, Dorothy Scott and family; brother, Jack Meek; sister, Jean Tessier and family; brother, Bob (Jan) Meek and family; and sister, Elsie McLean’s family.
